Emerging Women's Program

EMERGING WOMEN’S PROGRAM (EWP) is an intensified 6-9 month structured socialization and life skills program for exceptional females*, ages 14-19, some of whom have been identified as having endangered futures or who have been (or are) in danger of being suspended or expelled. They are referred by the Baltimore City Public Schools and are matched with an adult female Advocate who nurtures each girl through the Program.  Girls and their Advocates meet regularly for in-depth activities and workshops that address their particular issues and needs.  Young women in the Program are also included in social activities for youth sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and other City agencies; support services are provided by a number of public and private organizations and by individuals.

Advocates—certified Mentors—receive extensive, on-going training for this special needs population.  At the conclusion of the Program, the Advocacy role becomes less formalized and intense as girls are transitioned to Mentors, who in tandem with Advocates, continue contact as needed.  The goal of the EMERGING WOMEN’S PROGRAM is to see that girls complete their educations and plan productively for fulfilling futures.

The EWP Model, originally launched through Baltimore City, Mayor’s Office for Children, Youth & Families, then with a Community Fellowship from the Open Society Institute, is expected to be a resource to similar communities nationally with growing populations of troubled girls.  The Program is supported by complimentary partnerships with local colleges, city and national agencies, organizations and corporations.

*Caring faculty and administrators refer young ladies who have demonstrated great potential for success, and who may face challenges that might jeopardize the realization of their goals.  Summer participants are region-wide and join at will.
